What is the Level 3 Award in English for Literacy and Language Teaching?
This qualification develops your knowledge and skills in English language, reading, writing, speaking and listening.
You’ll explore how language works, how meaning changes with audience and context, and how to communicate information effectively. Practical activities help you apply your understanding to situations relevant to education and learner support.
The course is suitable for people developing their English subject knowledge for teaching or support roles, including literacy, Functional Skills English and ESOL settings. It can also provide a foundation for further subject-specific teacher training.
The focus is on developing your own English skills and understanding. It is a subject qualification rather than a standalone teaching qualification.

Develop your English knowledge and communication skills through four modules.

Understanding English Language
Explore grammar, sentence structure and how language creates meaning. Develop your understanding of word formation, speech sounds and the terminology used to analyse English.

Speaking & Listening
Present ideas clearly, listen critically and adapt your communication to different audiences. Explore verbal and non-verbal communication and take part in discussion.

Reading & Understanding Texts
Use reading strategies to identify key information, interpret meaning and evaluate texts. Explore approaches such as previewing and SQ3R to help you read with purpose.

Planning & Developing Your Writing
Plan, organise, draft and revise writing for different audiences and purposes. Use techniques such as mind mapping and brainstorming, and explore influences on English spelling.

The Award develops your English subject knowledge and communication skills. It does not, by itself, qualify you as a teacher or provide a specialist ESOL teaching qualification.
It can support your preparation for literacy and language teaching or further training. Employers and training providers set their own requirements for teaching roles and progression.

Yes. The Education and Training Foundation lists the Level 3 Award in English for Literacy and Language Teaching among its accepted Level 3 English qualifications.
It may help you meet the English subject-knowledge requirement, depending on your teaching role and existing qualifications. It is not compulsory for every applicant.
QTLS also requires an eligible teaching qualification, appropriate professional practice and successful completion of a separate professional formation process.

You develop and demonstrate your own English skills through written assignments and a tutor discussion. If you later undertake a teaching qualification or apply for QTLS, separate teaching-practice requirements may apply.

This is a Level 3 qualification focused on English subject knowledge for literacy and language teaching. GCSE English and Level 2 Functional Skills English are Level 2 qualifications with different purposes and assessment requirements.
The Award is not the same qualification as GCSE English or Functional Skills. If you need English for employment or entry to another course, check exactly which qualifications are accepted.

Focus Awards sets a minimum age of 16 and does not specify a particular prior academic qualification. Entry is subject to the training provider’s requirements.
You’ll need a good standard of spoken and written English to analyse texts, discuss ideas and complete assignments at Level 3. This is not a beginner English-language course.

Not necessarily. If your aim is to meet the English qualification requirements for QTLS, ETF also accepts qualifications such as A Level English Language and A Level English Language and Literature.
