Which Assessor Qualification Do I Need?
Choose the route that matches your assessment role. Everyone completes Unit 1, with additional units depending on where and how they assess.
Understanding Assessment
Unit 1 only
Choose this route if you need to understand assessment but do not carry out assessments yourself - for example, if you manage assessors or advise learners. You do not need learners to assess. This is a knowledge-only qualification and does not qualify you as a practical assessor.
Qualification: Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment
Assessing in the Workplace
Units 1 + 2
Choose this route if you assess people carrying out their everyday work duties, such as learners completing an NVQ.
Qualification: Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment
Assessing in Training Settings
Units 1 + 3
Choose this route if you assess vocational skills and knowledge through tests, assignments or practical activities in a classroom, workshop or other training setting.
Qualification: Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement
Assessing in Both Settings — CAVA
Units 1 + 2 + 3
Choose this route if your role includes both workplace assessment and assessment in training settings, or you want to develop your skills in both areas.
Qualification: Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA)

Understanding Assessment Principles
Learn how to choose assessment methods, plan assessments and involve learners in the process. Understand how to make fair decisions, keep information confidential and meet quality assurance and legal requirements.
Included in every route. Assessed through written assignments.

Assessing Competence in the Workplace
Assess learners carrying out real work activities. Learn to observe their performance, ask questions and examine their work to judge whether they meet the assessment criteria. Provide feedback and keep clear records of your decisions.
Included in the Workplace Assessor and full CAVA routes.

Assessing Vocational Skills & Knowledge
Prepare and carry out assessments in classroom, workshop or other training settings. Use methods such as skills tests, questions, assignments and projects to check achievement, make decisions and give useful feedback.
Included in the Vocational Assessor and full CAVA routes.
How the course works
Enrol & Get Started
Choose your qualification route and access your course through MKLC’s Moodle learning platform. Your tutor will explain what you need to complete and help you plan your assessments.
Learn & Complete Assessments
Work through the course materials, discussions and written assignments, with regular tutor feedback and guidance. If you’re completing practical units, assess your learners and collect evidence of your planning, decisions and feedback.
Achieve Your Qualification
Complete the assignments and any practical assessments required for your chosen route to gain your TQUK Level 3 Award or Certificate.
Practical Assessment Requirements
If your route includes Unit 2 or Unit 3, you’ll need opportunities to assess real learners and demonstrate your assessment skills.
These requirements do not apply to the Unit 1 knowledge-only route.
Two Learners to Assess
You’ll need two suitable learners, referred to as your candidates.
Their work or learning activities must allow you to assess them against clear criteria in the setting required by your chosen unit.
Assessment Activities
For each practical unit, you’ll assess two candidates on at least two occasions each - a minimum of four assessments per practical unit.
If you complete both practical units, you’ll need evidence covering assessment in both workplace and training settings.
Your Portfolio
You’ll collect evidence of the assessments you carry out, including your plans, assessment records, feedback and relevant learner work.
Together, these show how you prepare assessments, judge evidence, explain your decisions and help learners understand their next steps.
Observations & Professional Discussion
You’ll need to be observed carrying out practical assessment activity. Agree the arrangements with MKLC before collecting your evidence.
Depending on the agreed approach, an experienced assessor may act as a witness, with a professional discussion conducted by MKLC to explore your decisions and confirm your understanding.
Remote observation may be possible where in-person observation cannot take place. You’ll need to explain the circumstances and agree a suitable approach with MKLC.
A professional discussion supports your practical evidence; it does not replace carrying out the assessments.

No. You can become an assessor without being a qualified teacher.
You’ll need relevant knowledge and experience in the subject or occupational area you assess. Some employers and awarding organisations have additional requirements..

You can complete Unit 1 without learners.
For Unit 2 or Unit 3, you’ll need two suitable learners and opportunities to carry out the required assessments. If these arrangements are not yet in place, contact us before enrolling on a practical route.

You’ll need to show how you plan assessments, judge learners’ evidence against clear criteria, give feedback and record your decisions. An appraisal or informal feedback conversation will not necessarily meet these requirements on its own.
Your tutor can help you check whether your proposed activities are suitable before you collect evidence.
