What is the Level 3 Award in Mathematics for Numeracy Teaching?
This qualification develops your mathematical knowledge, understanding and problem-solving skills through practical applications.
You’ll work with mathematics in three contexts: academic subjects, personal and public life, and professional and vocational settings. This helps you move beyond carrying out calculations to interpreting information, choosing appropriate methods and explaining your findings.
The course is suitable for teachers and trainers strengthening their subject knowledge, professionals embedding numeracy within other subjects, and those preparing for further teacher training.
It develops your own mathematical skills rather than assessing your classroom teaching.
What You'll Learn
Apply mathematical knowledge to realistic situations through three modules.
01
Mathematics in Academic Subjects
Interpret mathematical information, use models and evaluate data in academic contexts. Tasks include analysing mathematical models in research scenarios and considering the reliability of data collection methods.
02
Mathematics in Personal & Public Life
Use mathematical reasoning to solve everyday problems and make informed decisions. Tasks include planning budgets, calculating quantities and comparing costs for home improvement projects.
03
Mathematics in Professional & Vocational Settings
Apply mathematics to workplace situations and explain findings clearly. Tasks include analysing sales figures using ratios and percentages, and comparing the cost-effectiveness of different business options.
Refresh Your Maths Knowledge
Your course includes refresher materials to revisit key concepts and support your assignments:
Mathematical models and core operations
Decimals, fractions and percentages
Shapes, perimeter, area and volume
Pythagoras’ theorem and basic trigonometry
Probability and statistics
Ratio, proportion and scale
Data collection and analysis
Algebra and problem-solving
Work through the materials at your own pace, spending more time on the areas where you need practice.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes. The Education and Training Foundation lists the Level 3 Award in Mathematics for Numeracy Teaching among its accepted Level 3 maths qualifications.
This may be relevant if you teach maths or numeracy and need to demonstrate subject knowledge at Level 3. It is not compulsory for every QTLS applicant, and you may already hold a suitable qualification.
QTLS also requires an eligible teaching qualification, appropriate professional practice and successful completion of a separate professional formation process.
Check the current maths and English qualification requirements..
-
The Award develops and demonstrates your mathematical subject knowledge. It is not a standalone teaching qualification and does not assess your classroom teaching.
It can support your development towards teaching numeracy or Functional Skills, alongside an appropriate teaching qualification and experience. Employers set their own requirements for individual teaching roles.
-
GCSE Maths and Level 2 Functional Skills are Level 2 qualifications. This Award is at Level 3 and focuses on applying mathematics in academic, everyday and workplace contexts.
It may be suitable if you already have Level 2 maths skills and want to develop your knowledge further for numeracy teaching or professional development. It is a different qualification from GCSE Maths or Functional Skills.
-
Focus Awards does not specify a particular prior qualification, although you need a suitable foundation to study mathematics at Level 3.
You should be comfortable working with Level 2 mathematical concepts. Refresher materials help you revisit key topics, but this is not a beginner maths course.
If you are unsure about your starting point, contact MKLC before enrolling.
-
Not necessarily. If your aim is to meet the maths qualification requirements for QTLS, ETF also lists A Level and AS Level Mathematics among its accepted Level 3 qualifications.
Check your existing qualifications against the current requirements before enrolling. You may still choose this course to refresh your knowledge and practise applying mathematics in different contexts.
-
Depending on your experience and goals, you could progress to a teaching qualification or further subject-specific study.
Options may include the Level 3 Award in Education and Training, Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, or Level 5 Diploma in Teaching. Each has its own entry and practical requirements; this Award does not replace those requirements.
