Do Vocational Learners Really Value Online Training?
The conversation around online learning often centers on university students and pandemic-driven changes. But what about vocational learners—those training for practical, hands-on professions? Do they find online training valuable, or does it fall short compared to face-to-face methods?
A recent study published in the International Journal of Education Humanities and Social Science takes a closer look at this often-overlooked group. The research surveyed vocational trainers enrolled in online programmes designed to help them gain professional teaching and assessment qualifications. The findings challenge assumptions and highlight some powerful themes.
What the Study Found
An overwhelming 96% of participants agreed that education plays a crucial role in their future success. Even more striking, 80% said the skills they developed online transferred directly to their workplace and daily lives. From learning to deliver fair assessments, to refining communication skills, to understanding inclusivity in teaching, learners reported significant personal and professional growth.
Confidence and motivation were recurring themes. Many described their online training as a turning point—renewing their enthusiasm for learning and reinforcing the belief that education is not just about qualifications but about empowerment, opportunity, and impact.
Why It Matters
Unlike traditional academic learners, vocational students often juggle employment, family, and financial responsibilities. For them, the value of online training lies in its flexibility and its ability to deliver practical, real-world applications. When well-designed, online vocational training can bridge the gap between theory and practice, creating lasting benefits.
