Changes to Professional Standards for Teachers

In 2022 the professional standards were updated, the second standard in the professional values and attributes is:

Promote and embed education for sustainable development (ESD) across learning and working practices.

The standard parallels the changes to the minimum core which applies to all teacher training programmes from September 2022. In addition to the core skills many teachers are familiar with: English, Mathematics and Digital Skills, Education for Sustainable Development is now part of the minimum core.

For many, this is not an area they are familiar with and whilst there are courses on sustainability, these do not always connect with how sustainability can be implemented across education and into our curriculums.

TQUK have developed an Ofqual approved qualification, the Level 4 Certificate in Teaching and Learning for Sustainable Development which is aimed at educators including but not limited to:

• Secondary, FE and HIE

• Teaching and learning support staff, such as curriculum developers and departmental heads.

• Institutional leadership

MKLC has received approval to deliver the course and the course is now live- https://www.mklc.co.uk/courses/sustainable-development.

The course content has been designed with educators in mind, whether you have a little to no experience with sustainability or a strong affinity, the course can help you take that knowledge into your teaching practice.

During the course, you will learn:

  • Climate change and sustainability basics for educators

  • Introduction to education for sustainable development

  • Teaching and learning strategies for sustainability and climate change

  • Ways to embed sustainability into curriculum

  • Ways to decarbonise

  • Learning and supporting sustainability in an education setting

The course has a guided learning hours of 180 hours and MKLC is offering this as a self paced course, to be completed over a year to fit around work and other commitments.

The introductory price of the course is £500 and this may be paid in interest free instalments starting from only £50 a month.
